Tobacco Use Prohibited

  • The Grove Public Schools Board of Education is committed to providing a healthy and productive environment for all persons using the school facilities. The board of education recognizes that tobacco use has been linked to illnesses and disabilities and that federal law prohibits smoking in any indoor facility, or the grounds thereof, which is used to provide educational services to children. This policy is intended to improve the health and safety of all individuals using the school, and promote a healthier learning environment for our students.

Therefore, effective August 1,2004, smoking chewing or any other use of tobacco by staff, students, and members of the public is prohibited on, in or upon any school property at any time, 24 hours a day, 7days a week.

  1. "School property" is defined as all property owned, leased, rented or otherwise used by Grove Public School including but not limited to the following:
    1. All interior portions of any building or other structure used for instruction, administration, support services, maintenance, or storage. This also includes, but is not limited to, areas normally reserved for the exclusive use of faculty or support staff.
    2. All school grounds over which the school exercises control including areas surrounding any building, playgrounds, athletic fields, recreation areas, and parking areas.
    3. All vehicles used by the district for transporting students, staff, visitors, or other persons.
  2. "Tobacco" is defined as cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco, and all other kinds and forms of tobacco prepared in such manner to be suitable for chewing, smoking or both, and includes cloves or any other product packaged for smoking.
  3. "Use" is defined as lighting, chewing, dipping, inhaling, or smoking any tobacco as defined within this policy.

All students, faculty, and staff are responsible for adhering to this policy. Employees are warned that violation of this policy may lead to dismissal action. Students violating this policy will be disciplined by mandatory classroom training in the dangers of tobacco and or suspension from school.
