I am Marsha Hickman. I have a Bachelors of Science Education. I majored in Early Childhood Education at Northeastern State University. I have taught at Grove for 10 years (5 yrs. in the Developmentally Delayed Program, 1 yr in Kindergarten, & now going into my 5th year in Pre-K). Before coming ot Grove, I taught one year on the Navajo Reservation at Navajo, NM as a Special Education teacher. I am married and have a three-year-old son.
Education is the dominant profession in my family. My mother taught. I have had six aunts and uncles that have taught. I have eight cousins that teach. The desire to help children reach their potential seems inherited for me.
I try to teach to the whole child. I teach self help skills, social skills, fine motor, gross motor, language skills, and cognitive skills. I strive to serve all learning styles in my room by allowing time to HEAR the lesson, SPEAK or sing the lesson, SEE the lesson, MOVE to the lesson, TOUCH the lesson, and sometimes even TASTE the lesson. In Pre-K I teach to the whole group, small groups, and of course in centers. I love Pre-K because I work with such a wide variety of personalities and abilities. All of the children are so full of energy and so loveable.
My discipline policy is as follows:
-
My classroom rules:
1) Follow directions & respect others & their property.
2) Keep hands & feet to yourself.
3) Use you inside voice when inside.
The consequences for inappropriate behavior are as follows:
One misconduct results in a verbal warning.
Two misconduct results in moving their name to the yellow light and time out from the situation.
Three misconduct results in moving their name to the red light and missing a center or recess.
Your child will receive a stoplight on a colored construction paper every day to serve as a report of their behavior for the day. A green light means your child had a good day. A yellow light means your child had verbal warnings & possible timeout. A red light means your child had to lose a center time &/or some of their recess. You will receive a note (or I may try to call you) describing the negative red light behavior. Please sign the note so I know you’re aware we had a problem. Parent involvement is important for this discipline method to be successful. Please ask your child how their day went. Praise them when they have a good day. Also, when there is negative behavior, please talk with them about it. Thank you for your vital support.
