GROVE, Okla. — When the new school year began at Grove Middle School, 7th grade Geography and 8th grade History teacher Miranda Woods was already several steps ahead.
A Grove alumna and longtime educator, Woods spent the days leading up to the first day of school preparing her classroom, attending MTSS meetings before her official start date and developing engaging lessons for her students. She also noticed another need around the school and took the initiative to help.
Several GMS storage areas were in need of some serious organization. Woods volunteered to tackle the project, helping clean out, organize and stock the spaces so they would be ready for the start of the school year.
Her willingness to step in wherever she is needed is one of the reasons Woods was recognized as a Grove Middle School Staff Member of the Month for August.
“Mrs. Woods saw what needed to be done and simply jumped in to help,” GMS principal Mindy Collins said. “Her hard work, initiative and commitment to GMS and our students do not go unnoticed.”
For Woods, her commitment to Grove goes far beyond her classroom. She has spent 19 years teaching in Grove, and there appears to be no end in sight for her dedication to the district.
When asked what her favorite part about working at Grove is, Woods' answer was simple: the kids.
“I love listening to them and helping them succeed,” she said.
That connection with students is at the heart of why Woods continues to enjoy her work. As a teacher, she has the opportunity to help young people grow academically while also encouraging them to become successful and confident individuals.
Woods' connection to Grove is also deeply personal. A Grove graduate herself, she considers the community more than just the place where she works.
“Grove is my home and I am proud of my home,” Woods said. “I want to make a difference and be the best I can possibly be.”
One of her favorite Grove traditions reflects that strong connection to the community. Woods immediately named the Grove Homecoming Parade when asked about her favorite tradition, citing the downtown experience and everything surrounding the annual Homecoming festivities.
While many people know Woods as a dedicated educator, there are a few things they might not know about her. Before becoming a teacher, Woods was a criminal justice major in college. Outside of school, she enjoys decorating and creating floral arrangements.
Whether she is preparing lessons, helping students succeed or simply noticing something around campus that needs to be done, Woods continues to demonstrate the kind of initiative and commitment that make a difference in a school community.
After 19 years of teaching in Grove, Woods remains focused on the same thing that brought her into education in the first place, her students and her community.
For Grove Middle School, having a teacher who is willing to go above and beyond is something worth celebrating.
